Description:
Sitting in the scrap line at Sterling, IL, is New York Central 4-6-4 Hudson type #5417 (serial #68851, clas J-3a). The loco was built by ALCo-Schenectaady in October of 1937 and lasted nearly 17 years until retirement in October of 1954. Specs - 79" drivers, impessive 265psi boiler pressure, 22.5x29" cylinders, engine weight of 360,000 lb, tractive effort of 41,860 lb, booser tractive effort of 12,100 lb. An unknown photographer took this photo, probably the last photo taken of it.
